Privacy Policy

Draft. This page is a working draft that has not yet been reviewed by a lawyer. It describes how Globeway works today and will be replaced by the final version before the app is released.
Globeway is a travel discovery and planning app, with a website at globeway.app. It is made and run by Boreal Software LLC, a Michigan limited liability company (“we” in this policy). This page explains in plain language what information Globeway collects, what it is used for, who else handles it, and what you can do about it.
Globeway carries no advertising and does not sell your information.
What you can do without an account
You can browse countries, regions, cities, stories and published Explorer Journals without creating an account. Nothing about what you read is sent to us with your name. The app keeps a few things on your own phone only, such as recently viewed places, your place in a story, unfinished journal drafts, and copies of pages you have opened so they still work without a signal.
The launch email list on the website
Before the app is in the App Store, the website offers to email you when it is out. If you leave your email address, we keep that address and the page you were reading, send you one email on launch day, and nothing else. It is never shared or sold. To be removed from the list, write to the address at the end of this page.
What we collect when you create an account
- Sign-in details. Your email address, and a sign-in record from Apple or Google if you use them. We never see or store your Apple or Google password. If you sign in with an email code, the code is sent to you by email.
- Your Public Explorer Profile, if you set one up: a display name, an explorer identity, and optionally a profile photo, a general location and a short bio. This is public. Your email address is not.
- What you write and upload. Explorer Journals and their photos, questions, answers, and reports you send about other content.
- Your trips. The answers you give the Trip Planner (for example where you are travelling from, your dates, budget and interests), the itineraries it writes, the changes and notes you add, your packing lists, and your travel preferences if you save them.
- Your Atlas and Memories. The countries you mark as explored, past journeys you add, places you save, and the photos, notes and reflections you keep in Memories. These are private to you.
- Purchases. Whether you have Globeway Premium or a Trip Pass, and when it renews or ends. We never receive your card or payment details; Apple handles payment.
- Reactions and saves. Journals, stories and destinations you saved, and journals you marked Helpful or Inspired Me.
- Settings. Your notification choices, including quiet hours, and your temperature unit.
Photos you add are resized on your phone before upload, which also removes the location and camera details stored inside the photo file.
Location
Globeway does not track where you are. Some buttons, such as “Use my location” in the Trip Planner and when saving a place, ask for your approximate location at that moment, and only when you tap them. The app turns the position into a town name, keeps only that name, and never stores the position itself. You can say no, and the feature simply asks you to type the place instead.
Notifications
Journey reminders are created on your phone and never leave it. If you allow notifications, the app also registers your phone’s push address with us, so that moderators can be told when something needs a look. Only moderators receive these alerts. You can turn notifications off in the app or in your iPhone’s settings at any time.
Usage statistics
To learn which parts of Globeway are used, the app counts which screens are opened and which features are used, for example how often the Trip Planner is started. These counts contain no names, no email addresses, no text you type and nothing you search for. They are handled for us by PostHog. You can turn this off in the app under Profile & Settings, “Share usage data”.
What we do not collect
- Your precise location, and no location at all unless you tap a button that asks for it.
- Your contacts, or your photo library beyond the photos you choose yourself.
- Advertising identifiers. There is no advertising in Globeway.
How your information is used
- To run your account and show you your own journals, trips, Atlas and saved items on any device.
- To show what you choose to publish to other explorers.
- To write and change itineraries you ask for, and to fill in the planner from your saved preferences.
- To show the weather for the places in your trip.
- To keep the community safe: screening published text and photos, and reviewing reports.
- To know whether Premium features should be unlocked for you.
- To send you sign-in codes and, if you asked for it, the one launch email.
Other companies that handle your information
Globeway relies on a small number of service providers. They handle information only to provide their service to us.
- Supabase stores accounts, journals, photos, trips and settings, and handles sign-in.
- Apple processes purchases and provides “Sign in with Apple”. Apple’s weather service receives the coordinates of the places in your trip (not your own location) to provide forecasts. Google provides “Sign in with Google”, and will process purchases when the Android app is released.
- RevenueCat keeps the record of what your account has bought, identified by an account number rather than your name or email.
- Anthropic provides the artificial intelligence (Claude) behind three features. When you plan a trip, your Trip Planner answers and the itinerary are sent to it so it can write or change the plan. When you publish a journal, its photos are sent to it to be checked for content that is not allowed, and a profile photo is checked the same way. Your name and email are not included.
- Resend delivers sign-in emails and the launch email.
- Expo delivers app updates and the push notifications described above. It receives your phone’s push address and basic details about the app version.
- PostHog stores the usage counts described above.
- Map and place services. Street maps in the Journey Slideshow and the Travel Companion come from OpenFreeMap (with MapTiler as a backup), driving routes from the Valhalla router run by FOSSGIS, and place lookups from Photon by Komoot and OpenStreetMap’s Nominatim. Like any website, these receive your device’s internet address and the place or map area being requested. They do not receive your name or account.
- Vercel hosts the website.
We may also disclose information if the law requires it.
What is public
Journals you publish, questions and answers you post, and your Public Explorer Profile can be seen by other people using the app. Drafts, your trips, your Atlas and Memories, your email address and your purchases are never public.
Seeing a copy of your information
In the app, Profile & Settings, then Download My Data, gives you a file with everything Globeway holds for your account: your profile, journals, questions and answers, trips, Atlas, Memories, saved items and settings. Photos are listed by their links.
Deleting your account and your information
You can delete your account at any time in the app: Profile & Settings, then Delete Account. This permanently removes your account, your Public Explorer Profile, your journals and their photos, your questions and answers, your trips, your Atlas and Memories, your saved items and your settings. It cannot be undone.
Deleting your account does not cancel a subscription bought through Apple. Cancel it in your Apple account settings, or it will continue to renew.
You can also delete individual journals, questions, answers, trips, memories and photos without deleting your account.
Your choices and rights
You can see and change your profile and settings in the app, download your information as described above, and ask us to correct or delete it by writing to the address below. Depending on where you live, the law may give you further rights, and you can exercise them by writing to the same address.
Children
Globeway is for people aged 17 and over, and you must be 17 to create an account. It is not intended for children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect information from them.
Changes to this policy
If this policy changes in a way that matters, the date at the top will change and the app will say so.
