💰 Budget
The Republic of the Congo is expensive relative to what is on offer. Brazzaville and the oil city of Pointe-Noire have costly hotels aimed at business travellers; the gorilla lodges in the north are premium-priced and reached by charter flight. Cash dominates outside the two big cities.

✈️ Visa Requirements
A visa is required for most nationalities and is generally arranged in advance at a Congolese embassy, often with a letter of invitation or hotel booking, though applications can be made online through some missions. A few nationalities can get a visa on arrival, and the government announced in May 2026 that citizens of all African countries would enter visa-free from 2027. A yellow fever vaccination certificate is mandatory, and arrivals may face extra health screening because of the Ebola epidemic centred in the DR Congo, declared an international public health emergency in May 2026.
- Typical Validity
- 15 to 90 days, single or multiple entry
Confirm current visa and e-visa arrangements with a Congolese mission before travelling.
🛡️ Safety
Brazzaville and Pointe-Noire are relatively calm, with street crime the main concern — muggings and theft, particularly after dark and around markets and transport hubs. The Pool region between Brazzaville and the coast saw an insurgency that has since quietened but left the area sensitive. Photography of government and military sites is prohibited and police checkpoints are common. The UK advises against all travel within 50 km of the border with the Central African Republic in Likouala.

🌦️ Climate
Equatorial, hot and humid all year. The south has a long rainy season from about October to May with a cooler, drier break around June to September; the forested north is wet for most of the year with a slightly drier spell in the same months. Skies are often overcast.
- North
- rain much of the year; drier and better for forest travel June–August
- Brazzaville
- hot and humid; main dry season June–September
🚆 Transportation
Brazzaville (Maya-Maya) and Pointe-Noire have the main airports. The Congo-Ocean Railway links the two cities via the Mayombe hills — scenic but slow and unreliable. Roads between the main towns have improved but are variable; the north is reached by domestic flight or charter, then 4x4 and pirogue.
Access to Odzala and Nouabalé-Ndoki is by light aircraft arranged through the lodges, not by road.
📅 Best Time to Visit
The drier months of June to September are best for the northern parks, when forest trails are more passable and bais (clearings) draw wildlife. This is also the more comfortable time in Brazzaville and Pointe-Noire.
