💰 Budget
Honduras is inexpensive. Local comedores, "rapiditos" (minibuses), and simple hotels cost little; the Bay Islands are pricier, though Utila is a long-standing budget dive destination. Cash dominates outside the islands and the cities; carry small notes.
- Dive Course
- Utila is among the cheapest places in the world for an open-water certification
- Daily Budget Midrange
- USD 60–120 (hotel, some flights, restaurants, tours and diving)
- Daily Budget Shoestring
- USD 25–45 (guesthouse, comedor food, minibuses)
✈️ Visa Requirements
Citizens of the EU, the UK, the US, Canada, Australia, and most of Latin America enter visa-free for up to 90 days. Honduras is part of the "CA-4" agreement with Guatemala, El Salvador, and Nicaragua, so the 90 days are shared across all four countries.
- Typical Stay
- 90 days across the CA-4 region, visa-free, for most Western passports
🛡️ Safety
Honduras has had one of the highest homicide rates in the world, driven by gangs (MS-13 and Barrio 18) and drug trafficking, and San Pedro Sula and parts of Tegucigalpa remain dangerous. Rates have fallen from their peak, and the main tourist areas — Roatán, Utila, Copán, and the Lago de Yojoa area — are much safer, with petty theft and opportunistic robbery the usual risks. A state of exception against gangs, in force from December 2022, was renewed repeatedly and extended to more than half the country's cities before ending in January 2026, when the new government did not renew it.

🌦️ Climate
Tropical, varying with altitude. The Caribbean coast and the Bay Islands are hot and humid year-round with rain possible in any month; the central highlands (Tegucigalpa, the coffee country) are cooler and drier; the Pacific south is hot with a clear dry season. The Atlantic hurricane season runs June to November.
- Caribbean
- hot and humid; wettest roughly September–January
- Highlands
- cooler, 18–28°C, dry season November–April
🚆 Transportation
San Pedro Sula and Palmerola, at Comayagua about 60 km from Tegucigalpa, have the main international airports, with Roatán a third gateway; Tegucigalpa's old Toncontín airport now handles domestic and regional flights. Domestic flights and a ferry link the mainland (La Ceiba) with Roatán and Utila. Long-distance coaches connect the main cities; local minibuses ("rapiditos") are cheap but crowded; a rental car suits Copán and the west.
Fly or take the ferry to the Bay Islands; travel between the main cities by daytime coach rather than driving at night.
📅 Best Time to Visit
December to April for the drier season in the highlands and Pacific south, and generally good conditions on the islands. Bay Islands diving is good year-round; whale sharks are among the reef's visitors off Utila. Watch the hurricane forecasts from August onward.
💱 Currency
The currency is the Honduran lempira (HNL), named for an Indigenous resistance leader. US dollars are accepted on the Bay Islands and by some hotels and operators.

💬 Language
Spanish is the official language and the everyday language of most Hondurans. English (in an Antillean-Creole form) is widely spoken on the Bay Islands, a legacy of British settlement. Garífuna is spoken along the Caribbean coast, and several Indigenous languages — Miskito, Tawahka, Pech, Tol — survive in the east and interior.
